Lessons Learned
As I settle back into a semi-stable work routine; I keep looking to apply my "teaching" experience to my everyday experiences. Here's what I've come up with, in no particular order of importance:
- Be a continuous learner - Some of the most successful people I know are still learning and they didn't get to where they are now by settling with what they knew from the past.
- Adapt to different attitudes - No two people are exactly alike and not every person reaches the same conclusions. I don't have to change my behavior, but I do have to adjust it in a way that can relate to others.
- A good team can create great things - I've been on several athletic teams in the past, some good some bad, so it was no surprise to me that this could happen. It did surprise me to notice that, in a business development situation, without a systematic approach to business creation; the team will break down very easily.
- Remain positive - It's far too easy to get frustrated and give up. The challenge is, taking problems head on and solving them. After all, where's the fun in watching somebody else get the job done?
- Take Blog notes - When I first thought about launching this blog, I did my best to convince myself that I didn't have enough to write about. Then I realized that if you take small notes throughout the day; it's very easy to organize some relevant posts. If you haven't tried it, buy a small notepad and take notes for a week. You'll be surprised.
- Stay current - While 6 days doesn't seem like a long time, it could mean missing a great opportunity and it may not come back. In my case, I didn't read the paper, the Internet, my feed reader, or watch TV for 6 days in a row. I don't think I missed anything... but then again, I'm not 100% sure.
With that said, I can't wait to hear what the other Business Horizons advisors pulled away from the experience.
